Junior tennis coaching

Tennis coaching is available for children aged four years old and upwards. We tailor sessions according to age and experience so that each child can progress at their own pace. The sessions focus on movement, mutli- and ball skills, technique and tactics, encouraging the children to stay active, improve  and make friends.

All new participants are welcome to have a free short assessment with a coach, followed by a free taster session of an appropriate coaching group. Sessions include:

LTA Youth Blue for children aged 4-5. Groups focus on movement, ball skills, basic coordination and racquet skills. Parents are often offered the chance to join in to help the children gain confidence. We develop children’s basic understanding of the game, whilst gradually teaching them to rally with a coach.

LTA Youth Red for children aged 6-8. Children initially learn how to rally and control the ball, as well as the basic rules and points. We use a games-based approach to keep children active throughout the session, and to ensure that there is minimal waiting-off time.

LTA Youth Orange for children aged 8-9. As children start to develop their movement and coordination skills, sessions can really start to develop technical and tactical ideas, including an introduction to matchplay.

LTA Youth Green for children aged 9-10. Children progress to playing the “full game”, albeit it with lower-bounce balls. Coaching can really concentrate on technical improvement now, and also on enhancing tactical awareness by playing proper matches.

Real ball coaching is offered for children and young people aged 10-17. These include development of the more advanced technical and tactical skills. Recreational sessions are sociable, focusing on keeping the players active and healthy, whilst our higher-level sessions allow the most focused children to progress rapidly. We are always happy to help children find the groups that they are most comfortable with, whilst also challenging them to become the best they can.

There are various sessions available for each level throughout the week. Most children attend one group coaching session per week, although many attend two or more.

Adult tennis coaching

A friendly coaching programme involving around 90 adults attending each week. Sessions are great opportunity to get active, improve your skills and have fun at the same time! Groups are welcoming and sociable, and we love helping new players get involved.

Coaching groups are managed and delivered by our Director of Tennis, Richard Carter. To arrange a free trial, or an initial free assessment, please contact him directly:

For those who have never players at all, it is often rewarding to initially book a few individual lessons.

Individual tennis coaching

We can also offer one-to-one tennis coaching for children and adults. Lesson-length is flexible, for example, 30-minutes, 45-minutes or 1 hour.

We can match the appropriate coach to the participant, availability permitting. The cost of individual coaching varies according to experience.

In our experience, individual coaching works well alongside group coaching. Participants can develop their technical understanding on a one-to-one basis. At the same time, their tactical knowledge and matchplay improves in groups.

Frequently asked questions

Can I / my child try a group coaching session before committing to a course?

Yes, by all means! To arrange a free coach assessment followed by a free group trial, please email play@totton.tennis or give us a call on 0238 155 0 122.

Can I see a programme of activities?

We don’t publish a weekly overview of sessions, due to the existence of various coaching group sub-levels, meaning that groups are often differentiated not just according to age, but also experience. We do however have multiple options for every age, with different groups available on various days of the week. We will therefore make suggestions to you of the most suitable available groups.

Are you part of the LTA Youth programme?

We are proud to be part of this national programme. Further information is available as follows: LTA Youth website

How does payment work?

We send an invoice by email half-termly in advance, with payment made by direct bank transfer.

Could my child attend more than one group per week?

This works well for children looking to improve quickly, or for those who simply love playing tennis! We have multiple group options, and offer a 5% discount for all participants attending multiple sessions.

Do group coaching sessions run all-year-round?

Yes, although we do not offer regular weekly sessions during school holidays. This means that our programme runs alongside the school term, split into 6 separate half-terms, and running throughout the year for around 40 weeks in total. We do also offer alternative school holiday options.

What is your policy for sessions affected by bad weather?

We rarely cancel sessions in advance, as weather can be changeable right up to the start time. Therefore, we will attempt to run all sessions regardless of the weather and ask that children are dressed appropriately for the weather. On the rare occasion that a session is cancelled, the decision will be made on court at the start time of that session, or within the first 10 minutes. These sessions will of course be credited back. If poor weather arrives during a particular session and we decide not to continue, we will keep the children safe, sheltered and entertained.

Is it possible to borrow a tennis racquet?

Yes of course! We are always happy to lend racquets to our coaching participants.

Do you sell tennis racquets and balls?

Yes, we are pleased to sell adult / youth Mantis tennis racquets, as well as Babolat children’s racquets. We offer a “demonstrate and advise” service for Mantis racquets allowing us to help you find the racquet that is perfect for your game. We then order the exact model and grip size that you would like, which is then delivered around 2-5 working days later. As an approved Mantis supplier, we have secured a 25% discount on online prices. We stock Babolat junior racquets in sizes from 19 to 26 inches (ages 3-12).

Do you offer a tennis racquet restringing service?

Yes we do. With decades of experience in stringing racquets, we can recommend the most suitable string bed for your kind of play. Guideline prices are £25-30 for a full restring. You can drop your racquet off whenever the reception is open (generally during termtime, Monday-Friday 15:30-18:00, as well as Saturdays 09:00-13:00), or alternatively contact us to arrange an alternative drop-off time (e.g. whilst adult coaching groups are running on Tuesdays and Thursdays 19-21:00). The turnaround for a restring is around 48 hours.
